As a newbie to wigs, I wanted to try Lee's instructional YouTube video for smoothing my frayed and "crunchy" wig with a flat iron to see how difficult it was. As you'll see below, I learned with the right equipment and guidance, the process went very smoothly! (See what I did there?)Why is this happening?
As a full service hair salon that specializes in wigs, we are seeing our fair share of women in search of hair pieces after considerable hair loss due to COVID. Based on the latest medical research, there's good news! Dermatologists and Hair & Scalp Clinics are finding that this hair loss is temporary. While that information is encouraging, it still leaves a lot of women worrying about what to do while they wait for their hair to regrow, and wondering how long it will take.
It turns out that COVID hair loss mimicks temporary Alopecia in a lot of ways. John Santino, clinic director of Laser Hair & Scalp Clinics has seen around 40 patients pass through with suspected hair loss from COVID and found Telogen Effluvium along with low-grade inflammation at the root of the hairs upon miscroscopic inspection.
Researchers from Indiana University School of Medicin and Survivor corps found that hair loss for those who had been infected with COVID typically begain around 55 days after their initial infection date.
Board certified dermatologist Purvisha Patel, MD points out that TE is a result of major stress on the body - physical and mental. Some women may be experiencing hair loss from the sheer stress of COVID as a whole, while many others have experienced the stress of the physical illness on the body and the general inflammation that goes along with it. Other stressors that would typically cause this type of hair loss include childbirth, hospitalization, surgery, and rapid weight loss.
How long will it take for my hair to regrow?
The American Academy of Dermatology points out that often by the time the hair has fallen out, your body is beginning to reset itself (provided there aren't additional triggers) and your hair is beginning to regrow. The downside to this is that it usually takes 6-9 months for your hair to return to it's anagen "growth" phase.
What can I do?
The pandemic itself is stressful due to the long term shift back to normalcy. Consuming a healthy diet that incoroporates protein, vitamin D and iron is very important. If you struggle to get your intake of these due to Parosmia or for other reasons, consider taking supplements.
Laser Hair & Scalp Clinics are seering some encouraging results from CBD derivatives with low level laser treatments.

]]>Customers are increasingly falling victim to the old adage, "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!" In this article we will cover some red flags to beware of when buying online, and why purchasing your wig through us (whether through our website or by booking a consult) is the best way to find your perfect wig!
RED FLAGS WHEN BUYING WIGS ONLINE
1. Fake or plagarized product images
Scammer websites will often use a product pic of a name brand wig, or a picture of a celebrity then send a generic created to "look like" the picture.
2. Extremely low prices or crazy sales/discounts
Most legitimate online retailers have similar prices. Remember, you get what you pay for!
3. No brand name or photoMany knock off product listings will show a name brand wig but will have a generic product title such as, "Medium Length Brown Wig." A product with a brand name in its title should also list the style. For example, "Raquel Welch Winner" vs. "Raquel Welch Lace Front Wig." (It's okay for the title to include the words lace front wig, but should always specifiy the style wig).
4. TyposIf the desciption of the wig has grammatical errors you can almost gaurantee it is not authentic.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM A SCAM
1. Buy from a reputable retailer - your best bet is always going to be buying locally! Booking a consult with us allows for proper fitting and making sure you get what you love.
2. Do not purchase from sites that only offer Western Union or wire transfers fro payment.
3. Check company with the BBB and check our list of known fraudulent companies (below).
4. Check the website for a return policy and contact form. Many scamming websites do not list a return policy or give a way to contact customer service. (Keep in mind that some scammers will copy legitimate retailers policy's - use this tip in conjunction with the others!)
5. Look to see if the business has any social media accounts and corresponding reviews. This helps show authenticity.
6. Check the manufacturers website to see if the store you are buying from is listed as one of their retailers. (Ex. if you check Jon Renau's website you can click on "Find a Store" and enter our zipcode and see us come up as a certified retailer).
5. Look for an "About Us" section that talks about the history of the company and services they provide.
LIST OF KNOWN SCAMMER WEBSITES
wigsbuy.com thodorey.comAlopecia Areata
Alopecia Areata is a side effect of an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks its own body including hair follicles. Like other autoimmune disorders, the severity of symptoms and hair loss can vary from person to person. While dermatological treatments do exist, there is no cure for this form of Alopecia. Many of our clients meet with us for their wig consults who have invested large amounts of money on partially successful treatments at most and they are self-concious, frustrated and worried. Whether going on to purchase toppers or full wigs, we are able to find options that lead clients to relief from their worries.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Hair loss due to PCOS stems from a hormonal imbalance of male hormones called "androgens." (All women have androgens, those suffering from PCOS have higher levels). Women usually suffer with this disorder during their child bearing years.
Postpartum Hair Loss or Thinning
If you find yourself with really thinned out areas or actual spots, don't panic! As inconvenient as it is (who needs another thing to worry about after baby?!) hair loss from postpartum a dip in estrogen hormones is temporary! There are ways we can style your hair until it has grown back in - besides, you're a new mom and need a day at the salon! If you're looking for maximum coverage and little time spent, we can help you find just the right wig or topper or some scarves or caps to throw on. Thankfully hair that is lost postpartum will grow back within 6-12 months!
Medications
There are a number of medications that can cause hair loss, including:
As with ANY side effects from medications, ALWAYS see your doctor with any questions you might have.
Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is caused by the compulsion to pull ones own hair (and sometimes eyebrows or even eyelashes), often extensively to the point of creating bald spots or patches. Certain factors can worsen the impulse to pull hair including stress or the feeling of satisfaction when pulling hair out. If you or a loved one find this to be a recurring issue, contact your doctor for help.
