How COVID-19 Causes Hair Loss

What You Need to Know About COVID-19 and Hair Loss

Why is this happening?

As a full service hair salon that specializes in wigs, we are seeing our fair share of women in search of hair pieces after considerable hair loss due to COVID. Based on the latest medical research, there's good news! Dermatologists and Hair & Scalp Clinics are finding that this hair loss is temporary. While that information is encouraging, it still leaves a lot of women worrying about what to do while they wait for their hair to regrow, and wondering how long it will take.

It turns out that COVID hair loss mimicks temporary Alopecia in a lot of ways. John Santino, clinic director of Laser Hair & Scalp Clinics has seen around 40 patients pass through with suspected hair loss from COVID and found Telogen Effluvium along with low-grade inflammation at the root of the hairs upon miscroscopic inspection.

Researchers from Indiana University School of Medicin and Survivor corps found that hair loss for those who had been infected with COVID typically begain around 55 days after their initial infection date.

Board certified dermatologist Purvisha Patel, MD points out that TE is a result of major stress on the body - physical and mental. Some women may be experiencing hair loss from the sheer stress of COVID as a whole, while many others have experienced the stress of the physical illness on the body and the general inflammation that goes along with it. Other stressors that would typically cause this type of hair loss include childbirth, hospitalization, surgery, and rapid weight loss.

How long will it take for my hair to regrow?

The American Academy of Dermatology points out that often by the time the hair has fallen out, your body is beginning to reset itself (provided there aren't additional triggers) and your hair is beginning to regrow. The downside to this is that it usually takes 6-9 months for your hair to return to it's anagen "growth" phase.

What can I do?

The pandemic itself is stressful due to the long term shift back to normalcy. Consuming a healthy diet that incoroporates protein, vitamin D and iron is very important. If you struggle to get your intake of these due to Parosmia or for other reasons, consider taking supplements.

Laser Hair & Scalp Clinics are seering some encouraging results from CBD derivatives with low level laser treatments.
